Behind the scenes 15 # Vikings

Normally, it’s boxing news that stays rent-free in my memory. This week, however, it’s not the punches of Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury that hit hard, but it's all the different news concerning Greenland. You wouldn’t expect it — probably because of my addiction to Flemish fries. And perhaps my last name makes you think of Friesland straight away. Subconsciously, I always felt different. With my parents being… let’s say unique, I needed certainty. Just to be sure, I did a DNA test.

The results told a clear story: 45% Scandinavian. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden — and somehow Denmark appeared again for another 30%. The rest came from the United Kingdom, another region deeply marked by Viking settlements.

Suddenly, everything changed as if I received wisdom from Odin. The temperature in my room dropped drastically. Thunderstorms were no longer lightning — they were signals from Thor. I stole my father-in-law’s rowing boat and went on a reconnaissance mission in Finland. For safety reasons, I stayed within a five-kilometer radius — but that’s beside the point.

And it doesn’t stop there. My favorite drink? Somersby Blackberry. Take three guesses where that comes from. And if that's not enough evidence: two red hairs in my beard and an undeniable love for the TV series Vikings should seal the deal. While most Dutch people start complaining this week at –5 or –10 degrees — and the national railway acts like there’s a total power grid collapse — let me remind you that this guy already has survived four Finnish winters.

So what I’m really trying to say is…  My ancestors are probably Danish Vikings ⚔️. Most likely Descendants of Ragnar Lothbrok or Harald Bluetooth. That would explain a few things. Of course, I hope everything remains stable globally, and nothing escalates. But if my Greenlandic or Danish brothers ever need me, I’ll keep my ears open for the call of the Viking horn. I’m sure I’ll find a longship somewhere. And if not, YouTube probably has some tutorials on how to build one from a tree. If I can twist my wyrd, then it might as well be Valhalla.
